Nassau County Accountants Offer Ideas for Teaching
Save Money? That is a common response the Nassau County Accountants hear from kids when parents try to have them understand why they should not spend all their money on Nintendo or Playstation games. The staff has compiled some basic ideas how to help your child understand the necessity of saving for a rainy day. Even if you were unable or still are unable to save money it is a great idea to try to help your kids with this task.
The first step is to teach them about what money is and how valued it is. Doing this when they are young will help instill what should be the thoughts with regards to money. The old adage that money does not grow on trees should be mentioned and that you cannot get everything you want when you want it. It is good for a child to be spoiled but not to the point where the loss of understanding about money takes place. How would someone ever value anything if they do not understand about money.
Next, explain to your children that it is not easy and quite an achievement to save money. Explain that there will always be times to spend it and that what might be something they just have to own now might be changed in a day or week. With this they might want something else that would be more valued later on and be thankful that they waited. Also mention that if they wait they might be able to get it cheaper.
Setup your child with an allowance so they understand that they must learn to manage money themselves. A contributor from the Nassau County Accounts mentions that their child is given $5 a week with half having to be saved and half spent. This teaches the child that not everything you get is able to be spent since later in life as we know is able to be spend on wants as we have many needs such as food, clothing, shelter and more.
Taking care of the essentials for the child is of course done always but for extras, you should try to teach your child that good things come to those who wait. Maybe even add some to their savings if they are able to save kind of like a bank does with interest. This will teach them that you have seen their ability to save and rewarded them for doing so well. It is quite an accomplishment to save and anyone who does should be rewarded.
This process may take some time. Most people live in the here and now and need instant gratification. Try to stick to your game plan and help your child save especially if you were unable to do so yourself. It will help them throughout their entire life.
