Nassau County Apartments - Myth or Real?

Those looking for Nassau County apartments and rentals might be dismayed to find there are only a few ‘legal’ places available. Many Nassau County apartments are found in the form of illegal setups in single family houses. With the high cost to live on Long Island, many residents are finding that renting part of their home is the only way that they can survive here.

There are several apartment complexes here in Nassau County but these are all connected units and run b management companies. Pricing for these units is quite high and the maintenance is not so terrific as you might get with an owner of a home you live in. That owner has a vested interest in maintaining the home as it helps their own resale value.

There are several complexes throughout Nassau County that have wonderful apartments available. Such complexes as Roslyn Gardens have a maintenance company with staff to take care of the grounds and units. These complexes offer tenants a bit of security as there is usually a community watching feeling as the same people and cars are usually coming and going. Problems with units are much easier resolved as each rental has a contract of rules and requirements. But once you sign the contract you are bound to it as it is a legal rental unlike a verbal agreement with a homeowner with illegal apartment. In that scenario, you might find yourself homeless if someone reports you to the town and tickets the owner.

When you have made the decision to rent an apartment there are many things to keep in mind before you agree or sign a contract:

- Length of agreement or lease

- Termination terms if you want to leave

- Security deposit terms and repayment

- Parking arrangements

- Utility agreements (heat, hot water, and electric)

- Subletting/guests stay

- Late payment terms

- Apartment issue & how to resolve/timeframe
